We believe all clinician benefit from understanding the “Business of Healthcare;” because all clinicians generate revenue, either for themselves or an employer.
We support the right of all clinicians to use that knowledge to further their career may it be as an employee, a practice owner, or the owner of a non-clinical business.

How it all started...
Clinician Business Institute started as NPBO™ in 2006, when I, Barbara C Phillips, started my primary care practice in the state of Washington.
While I had been studying business, I knew little about starting and running a medical practice. And when I reached out to my colleagues, I had more questions than answers coming my way. So over time, I began sharing on my blog, www.NPBusiness.ORG, what I was learning.
The emails, phone calls and requests for help continued to come. And soon, NPBO™ was born, to meet the increasing demand for business education.
Since that time more Advanced Practice Clinicians and other healthcare providers have started clinical and non-clinical businesses. And more continue to reach out seeking education, resources, and support related to the business of being a healthcare provider.
And that’s why we’ve started to create business training and services; to provide you with the tools to succeed as a clinician today.
Currently, ClinicianBusinessInstitute.com is home to all digital and live products and services offered by NPBO™. Our products and services include a private community, numerous business courses, consultation, coaching, and speaking services.
About Barbara...
Hi, I’m Barbara C. Phillips, APRN, GNP, GNP, FNP-BC, FAANP, and I am the Founder and CEO of Nurse Practitioner Business Owner (NPBO™).
I’ve been a nurse practitioner since 1988 (UW/Seattle), ANCC certified both as a Gerontological Nurse Practitioner (GNP) and Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP).
Over the years, I’ve developed a special interest in business and entrepreneurship.
In 2012 I was named the AANP – WA State NP Advocate of the Year; in 2013 I was inducted as a Fellow in the American Association of Nurse Practitioners (FAANP).
I’ve presented at various hospital and university educational activities as well as national, regional and state conferences and workshops including:
- The American Association of Nurse Practitioners
- The American College of Nurse Practitioners
- The Gerontological Advanced Practice Nurse Association
- The Nurse Practitioners of Oregon

My e-newsletter, Progress Notes: Business Tips for Entrepreneurial Clinicians, is published weekly, reaching thousands of subscribers.

About Johanna...
Hi, I’m Johanna Hofmann, MBA, MAc, EAMP.
Over the years I’ve been involved with NPBO™ on occasion. While I’m taking on a more active role today, I mostly work in the background.
Currently, I write blog posts and develop content for emails. I write the copy for some of the pages on ClinicianBusinessInstitute.com and NPBusiness.ORG, and I help create our digital products; I also contribute to various marketing activities.
And here’s a bit more about my background.
I’ve been a small business owner for more than twenty-five years; fifteen of which I spent as an alternative health care provider, practicing Traditional Chinese Medicine, Acupuncture and Herbal Medicine. Before that, I worked in corporate America as a Systems Analyst
I hold Masters Degrees in both Business Administration and Acupuncture. I have taught Practice Management courses at the university level for many years, including Bastyr University in Seattle, WA.
I believe in learning; I am a life-long learner…
Over the years I’ve reinvented myself… from computer Systems Analyst to Chinese Medicine Practitioner to a professionally trained Copywriter.
And the knowledge I’ve gained flows into the work I do today.
And here’s one more tidbit about me…
